"OLD SCHOOL TOUGH"
Hello, my name is TOMMY WHITE DEER, AKA, BARCOSH
ESHVAN, or to most sports fans, STEVE ZABEL, the
FOOTBALL PLAYER. I cannot tell you how many people
confuse me with STEVE SABOL, the Founder and current
President of NFL FILMS, but that's a story for another
time.
I was born in 1948, one of the millions of BABY
BOOMERS born after the conclusion of WORLD WAR II.
My mom and dad were products of the GREAT DEPRESSION.
My mom and two brothers were actually fostered out
to be raised by strangers. Both of my parents understood
"Old School Tough". My mom divorced my dad when
I was 5 years old and my mom moved us from St. Paul
to Winnebago Nebraska. Winnebago is actually the
Winnebago Indian Reservation, in NE Nebraska, where
Tommy White Deer first became acquainted with "Old
School Tough". That also is a story for another
time.
Schlobber Knocker, Snake Dick, Sticky Sid, Dick
Butkus, Ray Nitchkie, Ronnie Lott, the Steel Curtain
and now the 2007 New York Giants. These are terms,
players, and teams that come to mind when I think
of "Old School Tough".
There is absolutely no question that the New York
Giants won this year's Super Bowl because they embraced
what it means to be "Old School Tough". They wanted
the game more. They played tougher. They played
harder. The New England Patriot's offense could
not handle the relentless pressure applied by the
New York Giants defense. The Giants defensive front
seven played tough and extremely physical the entire
game. Their secondary was always close.
Now I am not taking anything away from the New England
Patriots and their quest for perfection, but their
perfection actually worked against them. It seemed
to me that because they had won three of the last
seven Super Bowls that they played like: BEEN THERE,
DONE THAT. They played on AUTOMATIC and never matched
the PHYSICAL INTENSITY and TOUGHNESS that had served
them so well in past Super Bowls. The Giants on
the other hand had never been there. I know that
Michael Strahan had been to the Super Bowl 15 years
earlier, but he and everyone of the Giants played
hard and smart. Their offense was conservative and
effective and their defense was over the top "TOUGH".
"TOUGH" teams win Championships. "TOUGH TEAMS" win
Championships at every level.
STEVE ZABEL
